Florida has strict mandatory minimum sentencing guidelines for many misdemeanor and felony drug charges and those sentences can be influenced by the amount of drugs, the intent of use and where you are arrested with the drugs. For example:
Marijuana drug possession – 20 grams or less is a misdemeanor and carries up to 1 year in jail and up to a $1,000 fine. However, if you are arrested within 1,000 feet of a school or park or certain other public places, the crime elevates to a felony punishable by up to 15 years in a state prison and a $10,000 fine.
Drug trafficking - felony in the first degree punishable by up to 30 years in state prison.
Because there are many variables that can go into drug sentencing, it is important to contact an experienced drug attorney as soon after your arrest as possible.
